Sunday Oliseh, the man described as the “Guardiola” of African football has ended up being a massive failure, but am I or are you surprised at the end result? , well you will have to decide for yourself after reading this article.
When the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) appointed Super Eagles ex-International, Sunday Oliseh, as National Coach to replace his former National team-mate Stephen Keshi, in July 2015 NFF President Amaju Pinnick said Mr Oliseh was going to do to Nigerian football, what Pep Guardiola did for Barcelona FC and is currently doing at Bayern Munich. Sunday Oliseh was expected to pass those brilliant punditry skills on SuperSport down to the training ground of the Super Eagles but few months into the actual job after the buzz had settled down we began to see cracks all over the Glass House.
Sunday Oliseh’s relationship with the NFF has never been a bed of rose from his days as an active international, Oliseh was omitted from the country’s World Cup squad in 2002 that for disciplinary reasons and in March 2004, Oliseh was sacked by Borussia Dortmund after punching team-mate Vahid Hashemian while on loan at VfL Bochum. One would think that Mr Oliseh had learned learned his lessons from his playing days and would handle issues better but that wasn’t the case.
Oliseh is reportedly very arrogant and has an impatient and hot temper, for a coach this was definitely going to be a source of tension with players in the national team and it didn’t take long for long-term captain Vincent Enyeama to be a victim of such attitude, then senior players passed away chances to be Captain and Vice captain no one even wanted to be the teams spokesman after the Enyeama debacle, under Oliseh’s watch Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike retired and Oliseh might claim innocence for Emenike’s case but is he?
After managing to grind out wins in the qualifier and an impressive friendly victory over Cameroon. After he recovered from his health issues he took Nigeria’s home-based players to the CHAN tournament in Rwanda, and could not get out of the group stages as the National team was disgraced out of the tournament. Nigerians were shocked at such a woeful performance and instead of Oliseh to take some sort of responsibility for the poor showing, in a very unremorseful response, Sunday Oliseh posted an online video via his official website through Youtube. in which he described his critics as“insane”. Oliseh ‘the pundit’ could get away with such statement but Oliseh ‘the coach’ of the National team shouldn’t be saying such rubbish, calling Nigerians insane after failing to go past the group stages even sacked Stephen Keshi easily breezed the group stage during his time.
Oliseh was ordered by the NFF to present his plan to the Technical Committee but the coach refused coupled with Oliseh stubbornness in letting Tijani Babaginda go after NFF had reportedly ordered his sacking, it was just a matter of time before things got out of control.
With all the controversies brewing Left, right and centre Sunday Oliseh finally decided to resign barely eight months in the job. People believe NFF is at fault, a large proportion of people believe Sunday Oliseh was afraid of Failure and found convenient excuses to chicken out of the job. Whatever you believe or don’t believe, Nigeria Football continues to suffer.
