Nasarawa Varsity: Association Appeals To ASUU, Govt To End Strike
ASSU-strike
The Alumni Association of Nasarawa state University, Keffi, has appealed to the State Government and the Institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end the ongoing ASUU strike.
Mr Ayiwulu Baba-Ayiwulu, the National President of the association, made the call on Monday during the inauguration the newly elected National Executive Council in Keffi.
Baba-Ayiwulu called for dialogue and understanding of the contending issues between the management and ASUU to resolve the dispute considering the effect of the strike on the students and its negative effects on the society.
He reminded the state government, the management of the university and the union that no nation achieved meaningful progress without sound education, hence the need for the parties to end the industrial action for the overall development of the country.
“During our campaign, we assured you of good governance if elected and now that we are elected, we will do our best to key in to people’s oriented projects in order to improve on the standard of education in the institution and the state at large.
”We shall spare no efforts to consolidate on the projects, including the completion of the ongoing alumni national secretariat, which we considered as laudable.
”I want to use this medium to appeal to the state government and the ASUU body of this university to dialogue in order to end the ongoing strike embarked upon by the ASUU in the interest of the students and for the overall development of the education sector.
”Our students are at home now as a result of the strike, which is uncalled for and this will affect their education and the socio-economic development of the university and the state negatively,’’ he said.
The president of the association promised to operate an open door policy, and solicited for support and prayers from the public to enable them succeed in the task ahead of them.
Mr Saidu Badamasi, the Oath Commissioner, charged the new officials to abide by the oath of office and discharge their duties without fear or favour in the interest of development.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that other officials of the association sworn-in include Ahmed Egye as Vice President; Mustapha Isa, Secretary General; Aku Angbashim, Assistant Secretary and Akolo Emmanuel, Financial Secretary.
Others include Salomi John as Treasurer; Joy Husseini-Firi, Welfare Secretary, while Rayyanu Umar-Giza, Polycarp Auta and Samuel Adokwe were sworn-in as Auditor, Public Relation Officer and Legal Adviser, respectively.
